Movie Review: Despicable Me (2010)

Hello everybody!
Today is the second day, "The Mad", in Christina Wehner and Silver Screening's Movie Scientist Blogathon!
Today my focus is Dr. Nefario in Despicable Me (2010). Gru is technically a scientist, but he would be preferred to be called: evil genius, mastermind, or supervillain. And I guess "Vector" is a scientist, but, once again, he probably would like to go with a different name for it.
Yes, I know this movie is super weird, but I have two sisters so....

Despicable Me (2010):
Gru wants to be known as the best (worst) villain ever! To do that he comes up with a plan to steal.... the moon!
He first plans to steal a shrink-ray, then build a rocket and go to the moon, shrink it to a manageable size, and take it! His plans get temporarily foiled when "Vector" over hearing his plan steals the shrink-ray first. Gru adopts three girls, Margo, Edith, and Agnes, to sell cookies to "Vector" so he can get inside to steal it back. He gets in deeper then he could have imagined.
Genre: Action, Comedy.
Lenth: 95 minutes (approx.)
Costumes: 8, there is a scene where the annoying "Minions" have their pants pulled down. And there isn't really anything that exciting.
My sister wanted me to put a picture of what she calls the "Gru sweater"
Script: 9, a few bad words.
"Can I drink this?"
"Do you want to explode?"
Crew:
Directed by:
Pierre Coffin
Chris Renaud
Produced by:
Chris Meledandri
John Cohen
Janet Healy
Screenplay by:
Cinco Paul
Ken Daurio
Starring:
Steve Carell as Gru.
Jason Segel as "Vector". "Vector: a mathematical term for both direction and magnitude, that's me, I'm committing crimes with both direction and magnitude!"
Russell Brand as Dr. Nefario. "Why..why...why...why do you have to be so old!?"
Dr. Nefario's name comes from the word "nefarious" meaning "Infamous by way of being extremely wicked." Dr. Nefario isn't exactly wicked, but he is a little mad. He is all about doing evil things, but he is very friendly. He is the (main) assistant to Gru and he really looks the part of a scientist complete with lab coat and goggles.. Even though he can be frustrating when he can't hear what is being said, he really can "bust some moves."
Miranda Cosgrove as Margo.
Dana Gaier as Edith.
This is so me, except I just smile and wave at the camera.
Elsie Fisher as Agnes.
Will Arnett as Mr. Perkins.
Kristen Wiig as Miss Hattie.
Julie Andrews as Marlena.
Pierre Coffin as Kevin, Tim, Bob, Mark, Phil and Stuart.
Music: 7, it's just personal preference.
Music by:
Heitor Pereira
Pharrell Williams ("roof" does not rhyme with "truth"!)
Quotes: 8,
"Why are you wearing pajamas?"
"This isn't pajamas, it's a warm-up suit."
"What are you warming up for?"
"Really cool stuff that you dont' know about."
"Like sleeping?"
"These are not pajamas!!!!"
Storyline: 7, there are some suggestive things, mild violence, and some crude humor.
Good For: Orphans, People who feel alone.
Overall Score: 7!

Once again, thank you so much for reading!  Make sure you go check out all the fun HERE!

  1. It's really a sweet story at its heart. My younger sisters love this movie, and I kind of like it myself.

Enjoyed your review, as always, MC:)

  3. I adore this movie. The design is over the top, and the characters are even more so. Such a funny script, too.

Dr Nefario is a terrific mad scientist. Like you said, he really has the look, with his pointy head and goggles. I'm glad he's chosen to be on Gru's side!

Thanks for joining the blogathon with this delightful film.
P.S. I'm glad you posted an image of Gru's grey sweater, as per your sister's request.

    1. It's a good one! Oh yes, when I first watched it I was surprised at how much there was to each character! I really like this movie, but the minions drive me crazy. ;)

Oh yes! Terrific, he is! His pointy head compared to Gru's flat one cracks me up everytime! They are a pretty good team!

Yes! Thank you so much for hosting it!!
Oh good, I'm glad that she isn't the only one enjoying it. :D

  4. For some bizarre reason I have not seen this, despite having the Vector line about direction and magnitude quoted to me quite often. :) It sounds sweet and hilarious, though...and a mad scientist who can bust some moves and is friendly sounds delightful!

So glad you could join the blogathon!

    1. My sisters and I didn't see it for quite awhile after the release but when we did finally, we really enjoyed it! :) It is very sweet, more than I thought it would be, but at the same time, every few mintues you are bursting with laughter! And Dr. Nefario really is great!

I am too! It was so much fun! Thank you for hosting!

  6. Re-reading the plot, I can see how Despicable Me was so much better and more inventive than the sequels. Oh, well, Hollywood is a business after all.
I really enjoy the "Gru sweater" (classy! Stylish!) and I happen to know somebody who looks exactly like Dr Nefario!
Don't forget to read my contribution to the blogathon! :)
    Cheers!

    1. Oh yes! The first one is the best. I haven't seen the third one, but I don't think I would like it as much as I like this one. I have a sweater that looks exactly like that, and my little sister calls it my "Gru sweater". :) Wow, really? Can they bust some moves?
I'm off to read it now! Thanks for commenting, Le!

  7. Such a fun movie! But you definitely have to get into it the first time around and give it some time, because the premise is so strange. ;) (I think the first time my family and I watched it, we borrowed it from our neighbors, and I believe they had warned us about how odd it is before you understand what's going on.) I really do love this one, and it's super quotable! Not to mention super sweet, with how Gru grows throughout the story. :)

Great choice for a "mad scientist" post!

    1. It is! And that is so true! You need to adjust, then once you do it is very good! ;) You had warning before hand! Nice! My sisters and I got it from the library and for the first half we were looking at each other thinking, "What in the world is this?" But then we got into it. :) It is super quotable! Gru really is sweet, but you don't realize it until you get to really know him. :)

      Thank you, Amber!!!!!
