Hello, friends!
I'm here to participate in one of my favorite link-ups, Inklings, which has begun again! Heidi's series is about sharing scenes from a book or movie that fit a prompt for the month. It's delightful!
1. At any time during the month, on your own blog post a scene from a book or film that matches the prompt, including a link back to the original post in your post.
2. Leave a link to your post in the comments section of the monthly post and she'll post all your links with the next prompt.

April 2024: A scene with a cake in book or film
I immediately thought of the one I'm going to do today. I don't think I've ever featured an animated film for Inklings, but they are some of my favorites, so let's do it! Because what's a birthday without cake? This scene is (trying to) celebrate just that and we get to see it all put together.
My pick is from Sleeping Beauty (1959). These aren't spoilers because I'm just focusing on what happens with cake in the scene, not anything else. Though there is a lot else happening which is hilarious.
The three fairies are celebrating "Briar Rose's" 16th birthday (wow, that makes me feel old because the last time I watched this movie I was younger than 16 and now that's long in the past.)
Wands are not allowed. Which Merryweather protests.
Merryweather: "But I've never baked a fancy cake!"
Flora: "Oh, you won't have to, dear."
Merryweather: "YOU??"
Flora: "Oh she's always wanted to, dear, and this is her last chance."
Merryweather: "Well..."
Fauna: "I'm going to make it 15 layers with pink and blue--"
Fauna goes into more detail but Merryweather thinks there's a big problem.
Merryweather:: "...she's never cooked!"
Flora: "Oh, it's simple. "
Fauna: "All you do is follow the book!"
Which Fauna does but humming and looking for the first ingredient.
Fauna: "Flour: 3 cups. Cups, cups, cups, cups..."
That looks like an exact measurement....Time for the second ingredient.
CRACK. |
The third ingredient, yeast, should be easy, yes?
Soon the three of them get sentimental over how Briar Rose is all grown up. And this is best done by making a baby out of the available dough at ones fingertips.
No time to waste, though, so we flash forward to the lighting of the candles.
Wait a minute...
That's better.
Flora: "Why it's--it's a very unusual cake, isn't it?"
Fauna: "Yes...of course it will be much stiffer after it's baked."
Which is my FAVORITE LINE. Because it's not baked but is frosted and has candles. As you do.
Flora: "Of course, dear."
Someone else isn't convinced.
Merryweather: "...I'm going to get those wands!"
Fauna: "You know, I think she's right."
Take 2: with magic.
*singing and voice crack* |
Fauna: "Just do it like it says in the book. I'll put on the candles."
Fighting has commenced. Based on how a few moments in she's already applying frosting, I'm concerned that the cake isn't baked at all. But if Merryweather can make dust magically disappear then maybe it is magically edible...
The cake's candles are being lit and Fauna shushes everyone as singing is heard. As Flora pulls Fauna away, Fauna lights the last candles all at once (which cracks me up because it shows they could've done everything faster).
That's the scene! When my sisters and I would bake or sew I always thought about this scene. I know my sisters have, but I'm not sure about myself. Then again, I was always doing more of Merryweather's part anyway.
Thanks for hosting, Heidi! Go to her link-up post to see everyone else's scenes. Thanks to all of you for reading! Which of the two cakes do you prefer? How good are your baking skills compared to Fauna's?

I've really been enjoying seeing all the variety in these Inklings posts! Who knew that cakes showed up in so many different stories? Hopefully this is not too shocking, but I have never seen Sleeping Beauty...we didn't watch a whole lot of Disney in my house growing up (though I was obsessed with the original Cinderella. And Mary Poppins was a staple).
ReplyDelete(Also, I've never commented here before, so...hi! *waves* Lovely to meet you :))
Hi, Lizzie! Thanks for stopping by! ^_^
DeleteAh, I also loved Cinderella and Mary Poppins! Have you seen the Cinderella remake (my favorite!!) or the Mary Poppins sequel (very cute!)? Sleeping Beauty is a ton of sweet fun,and not just from the cake, haha! Our VHS had a music video at the end and my sisters and I broke it rewinding it so many times to watch that MV...very addictive...
I have been planning on watching the Cinderella re-make for a while! (Maybe someday I'll actually do it, heh.) It seems to be one of those few movies where nearly everyone has only good things to say about it. :D I'll admit, though, I probably won't watch Mary Poppins Returns...I'm extremely fond of the original Mary Poppins movie, and I don't really like the idea of a sequel for it? I don't really want to see everyone older, and cute little Michael all grown up and having Adult Problems, and all that sort of thing. I feel like the whole time I'd just be comparing everything to the original, which is probably not the best way to enjoy a movie. :P (I do think it's so cool that Dick van Dyke was in it, though!)
DeleteLovely contribution!! I must admit, I didn't grow up with much Disney either, apart from Mary Poppins and The Apple Dumpling Gang. (And of course later, the live action Cinderella. <3333) I think the only fully animated ones that we actually owned were Winnie the Pooh and Robin Hood, and later Beauty and the Beast. :) Anyhow, you definitely made me want to watch Sleeping Beauty one of these days -- thank you! ☺️
ReplyDeleteOh, and I have seen the live actions for Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin now. Definitely want to do reviews of those and others one of these days. So many ideas, so little time! xD
