Mini Book Reviews: 1

Hello!
I stole this idea from Kara at Flowers of Quiet Happiness (Okay, technically I didn't steal it, I asked, but I did ask if I could steal it. Hm...). I am really not good at writing book reviews. This is a movie blog, but I love writing book reviews too. My book reviews are usually rather short, so what if I have several in one post, like Kara! And here we are. Enjoy!

Inside Out and Back Again - by Thanhha Lai 

"No one would believe me but at times I would choose wartime in Saigon over peacetime in Alabama."
This book is about Há. A girl who lives in Saigon, Thailand when Thailand is at war. She has to escape her country and go to somewhere save. Her whole life turns inside out.
Characters: 8, I love through all of this there are kind people there. It really makes it such a special story.
My Favorites: Há, Her Mother.
Words: 5, There is a bit of blasphemy. It happens when kids are teasing her about her religion yelling, "Boo-Da!" After her so she yells back teasing their religion.
"Whoever invented English must have loved snakes."
Storyline: 9, it really is a beautiful story. I definitely recommend it.
Overall Score: 7


The Q - by Beth Brower

"Because dreams are what stretch you to find more, to be a better person, if you will."
The Q is Quincy St. Claire's life. All her hopes and plans are for The Q. Her dying great-uncle makes a list of twelve things she has to do to get The Q. Sounds easy, right? Not so, she doesn't know what is on the list. And to make things worst her "Arch Enemy", Mr. Arch, has to see her do them. Will Quincy St. Claire get The Q?
Characters: 10, each one is so different and complex, it really brings the story to life.
My Favorite: Quincy St. Claire: realistic, Crow: clever, Fisher: funny , Mr. Arch: civilized.
Words: 6, there are a few bad words.
"Most people simply get or buy a paper," Quincy said. "Why you feel it necessary to procure one is beyond me."
Storyline: 10, yes it is amazing. Go read it now.
Overall Score: 8


Storybound - by Marrisa Burt

Una Fairchild always felt invisible. She always sat in the same spot in the library, reading the same books, when one day she found herself in a different part of the library, and happened to stumble upon a very unusual book, and she opened it into a land of story, a miraculous place where they write the stories that you read, and the stories are alive.
Characters: 9, you can see their feelings, you feel it with them.
My Favorites: Una: Ready, Peter: Brave, Snow: Yes I know, "Why Snow" You need to have favorite bad guys/girls, right?
Words: 8, "Where's my villain? I need to give him a kick in the side."
Storyline: 8, It is a fun fantasy.
Overall Score: 8




Story's End - by Marrisa Burt

So, we are continuing after the end of Storybound, here where the question is, "Will everyone get a happy ending?"
Characters: 9, we had all the old along with some new.
My Favorites: I still have all the same as in Storybound, so I will just say which I like more than I did in Storybound, or ones that were just introduced. Rab: amazing, Indy: smart.
Words: 9, there are some persuasive arguments here.
Storyline: 9, A great continuation!
Overall Score: 9.
Sorry, this one is REALLY short, but I don't want to say something that will give away anything that will give away anything in Storybound.

Presenting... My Charles Dickens Book

Hello!
I am here today to start something I am (hopefully) going to do each month! It will be where I show some sort of movie or book collection that I own, a series, a big book of several different novels/stories. I know right now it is kind of confusing, but I think it will work. Enjoy!

My Charles Dickens Book:

For Christmas 2015, by dad gave me this, a collection of five of Charles Dickens novels; Oliver Twist, A Tale of Two Cities, David Copperfield, A Christmas Carol, and Great Expectations.

This is how big it is. This is a standard size pencil.
I told him that I would read the whole thing by next Christmas. And I did! I still have to write a review on all these (they are sitting in my drafts) but when I do I will put the links here:

Book Review: Johnny Treimain

Hello!
I'm sorry, I don't usually do posts two days in a row, but I have this weird thing that I always have to do a post on the 19th of the month because that is the day I started my blog, but I forgot yesterday and I did a post so here I am doing one today. Enjoy! I just finished this and thought I would share it with all of you! I didn't really want to read it but I had read at a lot of places that it was really good, so I tried it, and I loved it! Here it is, Esther Forbes Newbery Honor Award winning novel:

Johnny Tremain, by Esther Forbes:


Johnny Tremain is a young boy who is a blacksmith's apprentice at the time of the American revolution. He helps out with lots of famous happening such as the Boston tea party.
Characters: 9, there really are some fun people here!
My favorites: 
Johnny: he mopes around sometime like we all do and he sometimes is bossy, but I love how much effort he puts into doing things.
Cilla: I love how willing she is to help everyone.
Rab: I love how committed he is in everything he does.
Words: 9, if there are bad words there are only one or two.
Quotes:  7, ''The British soldiers went about their business as though oblivious of the many hostile, curious eyes watching them.''
Storyline: 7, it really is a great story, but there are some disturbing things and death.
Good For: Orphans, Families, Some one with injuries, Anyone.
Overall Score: 8.

This really is a fun book I hope you will try it!

Movie Review: Jane Eyre (1934)

Hello Everyone!!

So LAST YEAR Hamlette at The Edge of the Precipice, hosted this Jane Eyre read-along and I said that I could review this version of the movie, and that was last year and I still haven't gotten around to it!!! So today I WILL!!!!!! I'm so sorry this has taken so long Hamlette!!! It's really hard to watch it in a house where only two of you have read the book and you don't want to have the others watch it because you don't want it spoiled and for some reason the disc won't work on the computer, okay, okay, I was being stubborn. I could have watched it any time on YouTube but I wanted to watch our version. Sorry about that. Any way, enough excuses. Here it is:

Jane Eyre (1934):
The film is actually in black and white.
Based on the book by Charlotte Bronté, It is about a governess, Jane Eyre, who goes to work for a Mr. Rochester and they fall in love, but there is more to Mr. Rochester than meets the eye.
Genre: Romance.
Costumes: 8, My favorite is the one she first has tea with Mr. Rochester in.

Script: 6, they did make up a bit. "If I die of the plague my dying wish will be that he marries you."

Colin Clive as Mr. Rochester, He really is a perfect Edward Rochester, but in this movie, he is such a softy! Taking in mind that this film is only 63 minutes long, but still, in the book he doesn't really care about Adele, but in this movie he is the great Uncle Edward. He is perfect when he first meets Jane, but after that is just too nice. I mean he is in the book too, but in the book, through the course of it he changes into a different person. Here he already is that different person as soon as he is in his own house in this movie:

Notes: I thought that this was the first movie version of it, but there actually is a 1910 version!! But this was the first version to use sound!
Good For: Anyone who loves a good romance, Anybody.
Storyline: 6, As this is only 63 minutes, as I have said before, it goes really quickly. There are a few scenes they rushed or missed:
1. Jane can make the trip to Thornfield Hall because of the small inheritance from her uncle.
2. They do not have the Gypsy scene.
3. She meets Mr. Rochester on her way to Thornfield Hall.
4. There is a "John" Rivers, and he is a missionary, but they didn't really do too much on him. He only has a minute of screen time.
Overall Score: 7

So, there is so much more to the story and if you want to see all Hamlette thinks about each chapter (you really should, it makes the story more beautiful!) here is the link to her post that has all the links for each chapter. Here:

Book Review: The Penderwicks

Hello Everyone!
I am going to review The Penderwicks by Jeanie Birdsall today! This is one of my favorite books, because the character Jane Penderwick made me want to be a writer. Here we go!

The Penderwicks by Jeanie Birdsall:

"A Summer Story of Four Sisters, Two Rabbits, and a Very Interesting Boy"
This is the story of four girls and their father on a normal summer vacation which turns out to be not so normal, they run into gardeners, bunnies, angry bulls, Mrs. Tifton, and a very unusual boy.
Characters: 8
Favorite Characters:
Rosalind: I was surprised that when I re-read it, how young Rosalind is! When I read it the first time I thought of her as at least 14, when she is really 12! Guess I wasn't paying very much attention there. I love how she takes care of all her sisters.
Skye: "Blue Skye, blue eyes." It is very relatable that people are always switching her with Jane. I look like Skye and my older sister looks like Jane, and people used to always call me her, and her me because I'm taller.
Jane: I already said that she inspired me to love to write. I actually wrote to Jeanie Birdsall for a writing contest. I didn't even get mentioned, but I did it! Back to thoughts on Jane. I love the way she thinks through the problem!
Batty: She isn't in the least! She always makes sure no one is forgotten.
Words: 9
Storyline: 8, There is a little kissing, so if you really dod not like that there is only a tiny bit, or if you are like Skye and just stick your tounge out, say, "Ew!" and just move along, either way I recommend it!!
Quotes: 8, "This I Swear on the Penderwick Family Honor."
Good For: Families, Sisters, Writers, Anyone.
Overall Score: 8!!

The Book Sacrifice Tag

Hello!
Erudessa Arandruiel at The Flowering Vales has tagged me with this Book Sacrifice Tag, and my reaction was the same as yours Erudessa! But, this turned out to be really really fun! Thanks so much!




#1: An Over-Hyped Book
  Situation: You are in a bookstore when the zombies attack.  Over the loudspeakers you hear the military announce that over-hyped books are the zombies' only weakness.  What over-hyped book will you chuck at the zombies?

Mwa, Ha, Ha!!! I am generally biased if everyone likes it I don't see what is so good about it, but this book is really over-hyped. It took me awhile to think of it, everyone else had thought of such good ones, then it came to me!!!!
                                                                           

#2: A Sequel

  Situation: You are caught in a torrential downpour and you're probably the type who melts when you get wet.  What sequel are you willing to use as an umbrella to protect yourself.

Am I the wicked witch of the west? I have thought about this but I have no idea. I guess I'll say The Subtle Knife by Philip Pullman. It is the sequel to The Golden Compass, and it was torture to read or at least it was when I was eight.
                                                           



#3: A Classic
  Situation: You're in English class and your professor won't stop going on about a classic that "revolutionized literature".  Personally you think the classic is garbage and you decide to express your opinion by hurling the book at his head.  What classic is that?

Well, I don't think I would ever throw a book at some one's head, (remember Jane Eyre?) and this was a very hard question because I like classics. But, I think I would have to go with The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling, I never got through it. Now thinking about it, I don't see what was so bad about it, but I'm going with it any way.
                                                 

#4: A Least Favorite Book

  Situation: You're hanging out at a bookstore (where else would you be?) when global warming somehow manages to to turn the whole world into a frozen wasteland.  Naturally, your only hope of survival is to burn a book.  Which book would you not regret tossing into the fire?

Isn't it global warming? Now, I've read stories that when you toss a certain book into the fire, and you take it out it's secrets are revealed. But, since this is my least favorite book, I am not sure. Could I say one of the above? Um, I don't know what to say. I think I will go with Lambing Out and other stories by Mary Clearman it is a book of short stories, the first one, Lambing Out, was okay, but the others were blah! I would tear out the first story, then put the rest in the fire!!

                                               

I am also going to do this extra question:


#5: A Series
  Situation: There's a flooded stream you have to cross on your quest and you can't get your feet wet.  Which series (oh yeah, by the way, you brought your whole bookshelf and also probably local library with you) will you use as stepping stones?

So, I was going to put the whole Golden Compass series, but I didn't mind The Golden Compass and I never finished The Amber Spyglass, so I have no idea. Okay, how's this, I just use The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass and when I get to the other side I pick up The Amber Spyglass to glance through later. I mean, The Subtle Knife was wet already...

Movie Review: A Christmas Story (1983)

Hello!
In my family we celebrate the 12 days of Christmas, and then Epiphany so each day we open one present and for us today is the last day of Christmas, so I can still review this Christmas classic, A Christmas Story. Each year in the 12 days of Christmas we all watch this. It is tradition, and it is really hilarious! "I think everyone should have a Red Rider BB gun." I mean that I think this should be a family tradition for all. Here we go!

A Christmas Story (1983):

I little boy's story of one peculiar Christmas where all he wants is a Red Rider BB gun and he tries to find a way to get one; Parents,
"They looked at me like I had lobsters crawling out of my ears."

he tries them all. Through all of this he and his friends are getting bullied by the notorious Scut Farkus. Leg lamps, day dreams, kid brother, old man, bunny suit, all of this in A Christmas Story.
Genre: Christmas, Comedy.
Costumes: 8, they aren't spectacular, but they really do represent the 1980s. My favorites are:

Ralphie's imagination for Miss Shields.
