I'm here to participate in one of my favorite link-ups, Inklings, which has begun again! Heidi's series is about sharing scenes from a book or movie that fit a prompt for the month. It's delightful!

April 2024: A scene with a cake in book or film

I immediately thought of the one I'm going to do today. I don't think I've ever featured an animated film for Inklings, but they are some of my favorites, so let's do it! Because what's a birthday without cake? This scene is (trying to) celebrate just that and we get to see it all put together.

My pick is from Sleeping Beauty (1959). These aren't spoilers because I'm just focusing on what happens with cake in the scene, not anything else. Though there is a lot else happening which is hilarious.

The three fairies are celebrating "Briar Rose's" 16th birthday (wow, that makes me feel old because the last time I watched this movie I was younger than 16 and now that's long in the past.)

Wands are not allowed. Which Merryweather protests.

Merryweather: "But I've never baked a fancy cake!"

Flora: "Oh, you won't have to, dear."

Merryweather: "YOU??"

Flora: "Oh she's always wanted to, dear, and this is her last chance."

Merryweather: "Well..."

Fauna: "I'm going to make it 15 layers with pink and blue--"

Fauna goes into more detail but Merryweather thinks there's a big problem.

Merryweather:: "...she's never cooked!"

Flora: "Oh, it's simple. "

Fauna: "All you do is follow the book!"

Which Fauna does but humming and looking for the first ingredient.

Fauna: "Flour: 3 cups. Cups, cups, cups, cups..."

That looks like an exact measurement....Time for the second ingredient.

CRACK.

The third ingredient, yeast, should be easy, yes?

Soon the three of them get sentimental over how Briar Rose is all grown up. And this is best done by making a baby out of the available dough at ones fingertips.

No time to waste, though, so we flash forward to the lighting of the candles.

Wait a minute...

Could use a little help.

That's better.

Flora: "Why it's--it's a very unusual cake, isn't it?"

Fauna: "Yes...of course it will be much stiffer after it's baked."

Which is my FAVORITE LINE. Because it's not baked but is frosted and has candles. As you do.

Flora: "Of course, dear."

Someone else isn't convinced.

Merryweather: "...I'm going to get those wands!"

Fauna: "You know, I think she's right."

Take 2: with magic.

*singing and voice crack*

Fauna: "Just do it like it says in the book. I'll put on the candles."

Fighting has commenced. Based on how a few moments in she's already applying frosting, I'm concerned that the cake isn't baked at all. But if Merryweather can make dust magically disappear then maybe it is magically edible...

The cake's candles are being lit and Fauna shushes everyone as singing is heard. As Flora pulls Fauna away, Fauna lights the last candles all at once (which cracks me up because it shows they could've done everything faster).

That's the scene! When my sisters and I would bake or sew I always thought about this scene. I know my sisters have, but I'm not sure about myself. Then again, I was always doing more of Merryweather's part anyway.
