Movie Review: Ever After (1998)

Hello!
"Why, if it isn't Ethel Barrymore." (No, Drew Barrymore!) ("Anyone? Anyone? Anyone?") ("Why does she keep doing that?")
Crystal at In The Classic Old Days Of Hollywood, is hosting the Third Annual Barrymore Trilogy Blogathon!

Yes, yes, I know that Drew Barrymore isn't one of The Three, but she is on the list of possible actors and actress to review for this. So it's not cheating.

Anyway, enough talk, here is my review of a Cinderella story set in Leonardo de Vinci's time:

Ever After, A Cinderella Story (1998):
"What is that phrase you use? Oh yes, Once upon a time..."
Danielle is a girl who only wants one thing, the love of a mother. Danielle does what ever her step-mother says, so that maybe one day she will love Danielle. When Danielle's step-mother, Baroness Rodmilla de Ghent, sells one of the servants Danielle does the unthinkable: she dresses above her rank so that she can go to the castle and get Maurice back. But, there she runs into the rebellious prince, Henry, and he is stunned by her amazing words.
'"Is there anything you don't do?"
"Fly!"'
Genre: Fairytale retelling, Period Drama, Romance.
Costumes: 9! These costumes are fabulous! Besides that fact that some of them are a little low (coughMargueritecough) and in one part a character is in their underclothes for a scene, they are all stunning and they fit the period so well!! Okay, I also don't like one of Henry's.
My favorite: Though the Baroness's outfits are elegant, my favorites are Danielle's. Sorry, this is the best picture I could find of it.
"You look like a girl!"
Script: 8, there are only a few bad words.
"Do not speak unless you can improve the silence."
Crew:
Directed by: Andy Tennant
Produced by:
Mireille Soria
Tracey Trench
Screenplay by:
Susannah Grant
Andy Tennant
Rick Parks
Based on: Cinderella, by Charles Perrault
Starring:
Drew Barrymore as Danielle. (I think she is great for this part, but some people don't like her accent.)
"You have more conviction in one sentence than I have in my entire being!"
Anjelica Huston as Baroness Rodmilla de Ghent. "Oh! I do love a good intrigue!"
Dougray Scott as Prince Henry. (At first I didn't like him as the prince, but as the movie goes on I did.) "I will simply deny you the crown and live forever!"
Megan Dodds as Marguerite.
Melanie Lynskey as Jacqueline. "You're only here for the food."
Lee Ingleby as Gustave.
Patrick Godfrey as Leonardo da Vinci.
Timothy West as King Francis. "I thought I had problems."
Judy Parfitt as Queen Marie.
Matyelok Gibbs as Louise.
Kate Lansbury as Paulette.
Walter Sparrow as Maurice.
Jeanne Moreau as Grande Dame.
Toby Jones as Royal Page.
Music: 10!
Music by: George Fenton.
Quotes: 10! "There was a bee." My sisters and I use this all. the. time!
Storyline: 7, there is suggestive stuff, person relieving, and kissing.
"You learn to pay attention."
Good For: Fairytale lovers!
Overall Score: 9! This is a fabulous movie. Go watch it!!

  4. I just watched this recently and I really enjoyed it. Prince Henry was probably my favorite character, though I may not have been too impressed with him at the start either. His talk about marriage and "how can one ever be sure which is the right girl?" was hilarious. :D

    1. It is very enjoyable! I do like Prince Henry, now that I've warmed up to him. SeƱor de Vinci is probably thinking, "He is over-thinking these things." That was a very funny scene! :D

      Thanks for commenting, Miss March!

  5. This is the film I reviewed for the first edition of this blogathon. :) It's so charming! I remember the first time I saw it, I didn't like it so much, but then I learned to. How can one not like Drew Barrymore in this? She is so lovely. I love the way you organized your review. A very effective way to convince people to see it if you want my opinion! :)
