Emma Read-Along: Week 2 Disscusion

Hello again!

I am here to join the second week's thoughts on Emma! This week we are discussing part II, chapters 1-10, or ch.15-28. Hosted by Seasons of Humility. To see Amber's thoughts on this week, click HERE! Anyway, let's get started!

Favorite Quote:
"That's easily said, and easily felt by you, who have always been your own master. You are the worst judge in the world, Mr. Knightley, of the difficulties of dependence. You do not know what it is to have tempers to manage." -Emma, talking to Mr. Knightley, ch. 18.

General Impression:
For the first bit for this week, wow! That was a shock to Emma! And, I think it changed her. She saw that she isn't always right, she saw how blind she had been. And to make it up for Harriet she was a little gentler with her. She let her talk and didn't interrupt. Then, she was like me, and was in a weird mood for a while, (ch. 18. arguing on the side that was against her own feelings), but, that was also clever of her. The kind of disappointing thing for me in these chapters, is that we didn't hear as much of Harriet. We heard of her, but not as much as in the first 14 chapters. Maybe it is not a disappointing to most, but she is one of my favorite characters, and I was a little spoiled the first 14 chapters. These chapters were mostly about Mr. Frank Churchill. (Also, to add a little side note, his father in Mr. Weston, wouldn't it be funny if it was Mr. Winston? Mr. Winston, and Mr. Churchill, it would be seeing into the future.)

Questions:
1. What does Frank Chruchill look like? It was only ever said, "He was a very good-looking young man--hight, air, address, all were unexceptionable, and his countenance had a great deal of the spirit and liveliness of his father's--he look quick and sensible." But I would like to know more.

2. Who is the piano from?

3. Why does Mr. Woodhouse seem opposed to everything at first?

4. Can anything be done for Harriet?

My Answers to Amber's Question:

1. Has your opinion of Emma changed at all during this past week's reading? What stood out to you most about her words and thoughts regarding Harriet, Mr. Elton, Frank Churchill, and/or Jane Fairfax?
I do think better of her. I think she is trying to become a better friend. She still did act politly to Mr. Elton. I would have smacked him. I don't think she is in love with Frank Churchill. And she is jealous of Jane Fairfax.2. What are your first impressions of Jane Fairfax and Frank Churchill? Do you find one more intriguing/mysterious than the other?
I think Frank Churchill is more mysterious. And I think Jane Fairfax is just not understood.

3. Which character do you admire the most at this point?
I think Harriet. She is still very sweet even though you can see how hurt she is.

4. If you were a character in this book, which character do you think you'd most like to be matched with from what we know about everyone so far? [I'm thinking romantically, but you can also say who would be your best match as a friend or relative. :)]
I think Harriet and I would be best friends, and, my beset match would be, Mr. Martin.

Thank you so much for reading! Be sure to go check out the fun! Thank you again Amber!

  2. I'm really late in commenting, but thank you so much for sharing your thoughts! Harriet really does have a sweet and gentle spirit, doesn't she? And she really seems to look up to Emma - which, unfortunately for her, doesn't always lead her down the happiest paths. But still. :)

Great question about Mr. Woodhouse! It does make you wonder about his past/upbringing. ;) I wonder what made him this way... *puts on thinking cap*

And I think you're right about Emma being jealous of Jane!

Thanks again for participating in this read-along! I'm only sorry that the latter half of the even kind of fell apart. :(
